Vikram Patel is the Paul Farmer Professor and Chair of Global Health and Social Medicine in Harvard Medical School's Blavatnik Institute, and holds an honorary appointment at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. His research addresses the burden of mental health conditions across the life course, their relationship to social disadvantage, and the use of community-based resources for prevention and treatment. He co-founded Sangath, an Indian NGO awarded the WHO Public Health Champion of India prize and the MacArthur Foundation's International Prize, and is a co-founder of the Movement for Global Mental Health.
